Courses Taught, Programs and Responsibilities

 

Morehead State University

Duties include advising undergraduate and graduate students; instructing courses; developing program and course curriculum; active role in department, college, and university committees; field visits to student teachers, play an active role in continuing teacher education and state & regional fair contests.

 

Andean Culture

The course is both an on-campus and two-week travel abroad course involving a trip to Ecuador with mandatory pre-and post class meetings regarding the course subjects.� An attempt is made to integrate cultural, social, economic and political issues as a comparative study of food production issues in the United States.� Various marketing and production sites will be visited.� Students will visit officials of the US government, producers, and leaders in Ecuadorian agriculture.� Businesses and farms in and around Ambato will be featured.

 

Conservation Workshop

Development of the conservation movement with broad treatment of the basic natural resources, including land, water, air, minerals, forests, and wildlife.

 

Curriculum Development and Content Selections (Graduate Course)

Each student prepares the content for a four-year program in vocational agricultural education.

 

Curriculum Development in Family and Consumer Science (Graduate Course)

Development of secondary and Post-secondary home economics programs; review of home economics curriculum for gainful programs; critical survey of resources; development of competency-based curriculum in all areas of home economics.

 

Directed Research (Graduate Course)

Prerequisite: One baric Course or equivalent in research methodology. The student must submit a proposal a plan describing the nature of the undertaking for approval in advance of starting the work and submit a final report. A copy of the final was will be kept on file in the department. A self-directed independent study on a special problem.

 

Directed Study (Graduate Course)

Prerequisite: degree in Agriculture. The student must submit a proposal or plan describing the nature of the undertaking for approval in advance of starting the work and submit a final report. A copy of the final work will be kept on file in the department.

 

Evaluation Techniques (Graduate Course)

The use and development of a framework of measurement and evaluation in CTE. Includes validity and reliability of measuring instruments, objectives, and programs, interpretation of material, statistical analysis, and research.

 

Farm Management

Farming organization, fitting livestock and cropping programs into a functioning unit, profit maximization and least cost combination of resources for a specified level of production

 

Farm Power and Machinery Management

Selection, operation, maintenance, and servicing of agriculture power and machinery units. This course will utilize Blackboard and email. It is up to the student to check the Blackboard course website and their email on a daily basis for announcements, updates, and assignments. Due to facilities & equipment, much of the course will be theory and identification based; hands-on activities in the lab will be utilized given appropriate equipment and facilities.

 

Foundations of Career and Technical Education (Multi-site through Distance Learning)

Orientation for students enrolled in career and technical teaching program in agricultural education, industrial education, and family and consumer science education. Course will provide a historical overview of career and technical education.

 

Information Acquisition and Analysis

The study of the processes used in collecting, organizing, evaluating, and presenting data and information through the use of computerized data collection and analysis systems. Application software commonly used in the various disciplines of Agricultural Sciences

 

Introductions to Agricultural Mechanics

Farm shop organization; shop safety; selection, use, and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment for construction and maintenance in agriculture. Practical exercises and projects are used to develop essential skills.

 

Issues in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and the Environment

Students will collect, discuss, interpret, and defend current local, national, and global agricultural, environmental, technological, and natural resources issues that are affected by economics, and cultural, political, and social conditions. This course requires intensive use of oral and written communication.

 

Marketing of Farm Products

Development of geographical specializations, demand and supply schedules of agricultural products, price equilibrium, long and short run cyclical price movements, hedging in futures, demand expansion, increasing operational and pricing efficiency, specific commodity marketing.

 

Methods of Curriculum Development

A comprehensive study of current curriculum content in Career and Technical Education. Emphasis on modifying and developing new curricula.

 

Methods of Instruction

The principles of instructional methods which apply to the teaching of agricultural subject matter which is included under the major program components of secondary vocational agriculture programs. Developing instructional plans, delivering and evaluating instruction, and evaluating learner performance for agricultural and extension education.

 

Methods in Teaching Vocational Agriculture (Graduate Course)

The principles of methods applied to teaching vocational agriculture to high school students. Course organization, farming programs, SAE�s, Future Farmers of America, and 4-H activities. This course will also cover the principles of developing instructional plans, delivering and evaluating instruction, and evaluating learner performance for agricultural and extension education.

 

Principles and Philosophies of Career and Technical Education (Graduate Course) (Distance Education Multi-Site)

Background, development, objectives, principles, philosophy, status, and trends of career & technical education; organization and administration of career & technical education at all levels including the impact of new policies, legislation, and program.

 

Seminar in International Studies

Analysis and discussion of problems and issues in international studies. With guidance of international studies faculty, students will prepare and resent a major research project that applies an international context to their major disciplines/areas of study.

 

Student Teaching Practicum

Each student is assigned to an approved student teaching center offering comprehensive teaching experience in Agricultural Education, and a minimum of 3 field visits will take place. Students are evaluated and are required to complete an extensive portfolio.

 

Special Problems

Permits a student to do advanced work as a continuation of an earlier experience or to work in an area of special interest. The topic of investigation varies from student to student and is decided between the student and advisor/faculty member.

 

World Food

Analysis of contemporary problems and issues of public concern relating to food, agriculture, and rural areas using the tools of fundamental economic concepts.� Farm income, food prices, world food problems, natural resources, environment, and rural development issues will be studied.

Survey of the Animal Industry

An introduction to the world of livestock and small animal production.

 

Occupational Experience

Supervise students completing an internship. Each student is required to complete a portfolio, and a daily work journal upon completion of their internship. Each student and their immediate supervisor is required to complete two evaluation forms, a midterm and a final that evaluates the students job performance, employment situation, and knowledge/skills learned

University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension

Responsibilities include but are not limited to; office management and administration, management of the county extension budget of over $40,000. Organization and implementation of committees; recruit, oversee, and lead volunteers associated with cooperative extension and 4-H programs. Create, coordinate, and teach programs and workshops for adults and children.

Aqua-Fest, A half-day program for 5th graders in Northeast Nebraska related to water quality, natural resources, and conservation.

 

Comprehensive Nutrient Management Program Training, Work with producers and project leaders on creating a livestock waste management plan to meet the Department of Environmental Quality and Environmental Protection Agency's regulations

 

Community Development, worked with the Santee Indian Tribe as one of two extension educators on a board created by the Tribal Council to assist with Community and Youth Development

Applications of Computers in Agriculture (Instructor of Record): Creation of course curriculum, instruction of labs & lectures.

 

Student Teacher Field Practicum (Team-taught): Instructed the technology skills necessary for students who will begin student teaching the following semester.

Pedagogy for International Projects: Worked in conjunction with the Workforce Education Department with various international projects that include government officials and educators from countries such as Nepal and Indonesia. Some duties included the creation and instruction of structured courses, educational trips, and advising.

 

Agricultural Workshops: Assisted with workshops created to give elementary teachers exposure to the agricultural industry. I created and organized packets of information the teachers were able to take back to the classroom, and aided in educational field trips.
