Mr. Smith, the school principal asked me to spend some time with Mr. Ed Wilson, the Director of Pupil Personnel. We discussed the role he plays in trying to prevent students from dropping out of school. He discussed the struggle he has with the families of these students. He also expressed some frustration with the lack of support the courts give to insure that students will stay in school. He gave me a detailed description of the procedure he follows concerning attendance. After this talk I met with Mr. Smith and discussed with him about the role he plays when it comes to student attendance at the school.
Reflection:
I am convinced that Mr. Wilson has one of the toughest jobs of anyone in the board office. He must deal with the parents that do not care if their students come to school or not. He also ends up taking many of the parents to court, only to have the courts to do very little to get the children back in school. Until the courts are willing to back the school system, trying to get these students to school is a lost cause. The students come back for a few days, and quit again. There must be meaningful follow-ups for there to be a real change of attitude in the students who want to quit school and in their parents as well.
