A sundial is a device that measures time by the position of the Sun. Most sundials work by having the Sun shine on the pointer (gnomon) of the sundial. The base of the sundial is flat and marked with the hours of the day. The gnomon casts a shadow on the flat surface and time can be measured by looking at what hour the shadow corresponds to.
