Introduce Yourself

Contact Dr. Lee so that you can introduce yourself and let her know that you are interested in MSU.  You can use the e-mail form which allows you to give her all of the pertinent details about who you are and to ask any questions that you might have.

Campus Visit

For those of you who are planning on majoring in music at MSU, you should try to visit the campus during the fall or winter of your senior year. The best way to go about this is to take a "college day" so that you are excused from your high school classes for a day. Contact Dr. Lee ahead of time and arrange the visit so that you can meet with her and take a lesson. This is also a good way to get some help on your audition music for MSU or your All-State audition music. Dr. Lee can also arrange for you to sit in with some of the ensembles and visit some of the music classes that day.

Scholarships

If you are planning on attending Morehead State University next year, you should plan on auditioning for a music scholarship. Scholarships are available for both music majors and non-music majors. Most students audition during the week of Band Clinic in mid-February, but other audition times are available by appointment. Just contact Dr. Lee to make the arrangements. Click here for further information about scholarships.

While there are no specific requirements for the prepared portion of your audition, you should be prepared to play a solo or a couple of etudes that show both lyrical and technical playing.

The actual audition will include the following:
1. Scales: chromatic scale and major scales, if you know any minor scales this is a plus
2. One or two prepared pieces
3. Sight-reading

The following etude books are good possibilities for audition material:
Rochut "Melodious Etudes"
Blazevich "Studies in Clefs"
Voxman "Selected Studies"

The following solos are good possibilities for audition material:
Guilmant "Morceau Symphonique"
Galliard "Sonata No. 1"
Barat "Andante and Allegro"

These are just suggestions -- anything that shows off your highest level of playing is fine.

To prepare for your audition, ask your band director for some help, and if possible you might try to take some private lessons from someone in your area. Click here to get more information about music auditions at MSU.

Apply to MSU

You should apply to MSU as soon as you can during your senior year in high school.  You must be officially admitted to the university before you can offered any music scholarship.  It is effortless to apply... you can apply online and there are no application fees.  To complete your application you must also have your ACT scores sent to MSU and have your high school send a copy of your transcripts.
