Janelle Hare

My main areas of scientific expertise are in bacteriology & molecular biology. I enjoy conducting research in the evolution and regulation of bacterial pathogenicity, and bacterial responses to environmental stimuli.

My undergraduate training was in microbiology (B.S.) and biology (B.A.) at The University of Iowa, where I did research into bacterial bioremediation, biofilm & colony formation, and iron deprivation as cancer therapy. For my Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, I researched the molecular evolution and genetics of the bacterium that causes the plague (aka “the Black Death”) with Kathleen McDonough at SUNY-Albany in New York.

After graduate school I did post-doctoral work with Eduardo Groisman at Washington University / HHMI on Salmonella pathogenesis. I then took an NSF teaching / research fellowship at Grinnell College to help integrate teaching and research into their undergraduate biology curriculum. I also worked with Leslie Gregg-Jolly on bacterial responses to DNA damage at Grinnell.

Here at MSU, I teach microbiology to allied health, veterinary technology & biology students, and biology to non-majors and majors. (See Courses Taught).
