Welcome to the Morehead State University Horn Studio
The private studio is one of the most important parts of any music degree. The private studio is the place where students work to develop themselves into the best musicians possible. In the private horn lesson at Morehead State University, the professor, Dr. Hammond, adheres to a musical approach to teaching the horn. All problems are solved through a musical focus on the finished product. Every note played, whether it is a long tone, part of a scale, or part of a concerto should always have musical shape. Through this musical approach, things such as technical proficiency evolve out of musical needs to shape the phrase, not technique for "technique's sake." The teaching activities in the horn studio are also linked to the other components of the music degree, such as ensemble performance, music theory, history, conducting, music education courses, etc. The integration of all of these parts of the music degree along with diligent, hard work on the part of the student, will result in a well-rounded musician. These students will be equipped to more effective performers in their chosen musical field.
Members of the MSU horn studio are active in university ensembles as well as the MSU Horn Ensemble. This group meets two hours per week with a focus on learning the horn quartet and ensemble repertoire, ensemble sound quality, balance, blend, group musicianship, intonation, and style. All private studios in the MSU Department of Music have weekly one-hour master classes called "Performance Class." The activities in this class vary from sectionals, group classes, performance of materials learned in the private lesson, and the evaluation of performances of others. Between the private horn lesson, Horn Ensemble, and Performance Class, the horn students at MSU see their professor up to three or four times per week in an educational setting.
