Undergraduate, initial certification for secondary education, is housed in the Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education, Sixth Floor, Ginger Hall. You will be working toward a Bachelor's degree with a certification to teach in grades 9-12. The Department of Leadership and Secondary Education offers support classes for a Bachelor's degree program leading to certification as a high school teacher grades 9-12

Program Requirements:


I. General Education Requirements:

A block of general education courses is required of all University students to earn an undergraduate degree.



II. Secondary Professional Education Program:


Students are required to take a core of professional education courses dealing with foundations of education, human development and exceptionality, learning theories, teaching methods, technology, and classroom management. In addition, field experiences and student teaching must be completed.



III. Major Field of Study:

All secondary professional education students are required to complete a major or minor area in a specialized field of study or an area of concentration in which they plan to teach. Specialized fields include: art, biology, chemistry, comprehensive business, earth science, English, French, geography, government, history, vocational home economics, industrial education, journalism, mathematics, mathematics- physical science, music, physics, psychology, secondary science, social studies, sociology, speech, speech and theater, Spanish, dramatics, physical education, health, and vocational agriculture. An advisor in the area of certification is assigned to each candidate.



IV. Additional Requirements:


Besides overall bachelor's degree requirements, students must meet and maintain all requirements for admission to the MSU Teacher Education Program including a 2.5 overall GPA.


Graduate Programs in Secondary Education are housed in the Department of Foundations and Graduate Studies, Fifth Floor, Ginger Hall. Your degree is from the College of Education. You will be assigned an education advisor and a content area advisor. Graduate Secondary Education programs prepare secondary teachers to meet continuing certification requirements and to advance in salary rank.

 

Degrees and Certification
Master Degree, Fifth Year, Rank I, and Ed.S. programs/degrees may be earned with an emphasis in secondary education.

 

 

Program of Study
A core of professional education coursework is teamed with a block of courses in which the student holds current teaching certification to provide continuing professional training in curricular and instructional research, knowledge, and skills. In addition to 60 hours of coursework, the Rank I requires a portfolio based upon the Experienced Teacher Standards. Please see your advisor for details on courses and the portfolio. 

 

 

Admission
Students must hold current teaching certification and meet the overall requirements for admission to graduate study as well as specific requirements of the program/degree they seek, including a minimum score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) of 750 for the masters degree program or a GRE minimum of 650 for the fifth year program. The Rank 1 requires a minimum GRE score of 650.
